Next week is International Day! We will be having a fun filled day with the entire school, learning about the different continents! Each grade level has a continent to focus on and learn about. First grade is learning about and presenting fun things from Africa! Today we spent time preparing for International Day by learning all about Africa. We took some time to remember the book we read in November, called Beatrice's Goat. The character in the story was from Uganda! We read a book to learn some Swahili words today! We looked at some other artifacts from Africa and learned some really neat things! We explored a fun African game, called Mancala! We even made our own mancala game boards out of egg gpcrates and beans. We had a great time playing the game!

How We Express OurselvesWe have kicked off our next unit! This unit will be all about literature and we will dig deep into the story elements of fairy tales and fables! We are starting off with the story of Little Red Riding Hood. We read two different versions off this story yesterday and then we added the story elements to a chart! We talked about the characters, setting, problem and solution. We also discussed different words and phrases that show us that this story could be a fairy tale or fable, and then we talked about what lessons were in the story. HOOK: Field Trip to Casa Mañana!!Our hook for this unit was seeing the play Little Red Riding Hood at the Casa Mañana theater in Fort Worth! They definitely put a fun twist on the story, that made it really interesting! We had a really fun trip today! MATH: Make a shape! We did a fun 2D Shape activity to assess what we learned about identifying sides and vertices in different polygons! We worked together to use a string to make new shapes and then counted their sides and vertices! SUPERSTAR OF THE WEEK: JAYDEN!
How the World WorksWeatherWe have been talking about all kinds of different weather! We made a circle map of all the different weather that we could think of. Then we worked with a partner to explore other weather concepts and even a little about different kinds of extreme weather on Pebble Go. We simulated a rain storm with water, shaving cream, and food coloring. We watched as our clouds became more and more full of moisture and then produced rain! Review Time!We took some time to review what we have learned in this unit. We had a fun challenge of sorting vocabulary that has to do with matter, force/motion, magnets, and objects in the sky. Math: 2D ShapesWe talked about composing shapes using other shapes today. We worked with a partner to count shapes that were parts of bigger images. Classroom Photographers!Soukhya and Charvi both paid 50 tickets to be classroom photographers for a day! Check out their photos in this slideshow! How the World WorksHow to Blow a Bubble! We trapped a gas!We are still exploring how the world works! We are working on a "How to..." writing piece about how to trap a gas in a bubble using bubble gum! It was such a fun treat to really chew bubble gum and write down the steps as we tried blowing bubbles. It was definitely a challenge and only a couple of us were successful!! Experimenting with WeatherWe have been discussing some of the weather this week. Yesterday we talked about temperature yesterday and learned how to read a thermometer. We really enjoyed watching a Brain Pop Jr video to learn a little more. Today we learned about the wind and did a really fun experiment! We made our own wind socks and then took them outside to test the direction that the wind was blowing today. Making Our Wind SocksTesting Our Wind SocksMath: Exploring 2D ShapesWe have really gotten good at sorting and describing different 2D shapes. Today we solved a shape riddle during our number talks. For our lesson today we explored the different shapes that we can find in pieces of art! We looked at many different famous paintings and named all the shapes we could find. We explored our Math Station activities together today, as well! We loved playing with the Geo-boards especially. These activities are great hands on learning experiences with shapes!
