How We Organize OurselvesWe have been working so hard to get ready for our Farmer's Market tomorrow! We have harvested, advertised, and packaged all of our good! HarvestingAdvertisingPackagingHow We Organize OurselvesJob Interviews Today!Today the learners chose their top choices for their Farmer's Market jobs. We wrote presentations about which job we wanted the most and why we would be good at it! The video below is of their presentation interviews! The PlanningThe InterviewsThe jobs go to:How We Organize OurselvesThe First Grade Farmer's Market is right around the corner! Getting ready has been quite an adventure. We started the job application process yesterday by filling out our own resumes. In the resume we gave some information about ourselves and listed things that we are good at! Today we filled out an actual job application to apply for a job at the Farmer's Market. The jobs are seller, cashier, greeter, or expert. We chose the job that we thought would be the best fit and then explained why we wanted that job and then listed ways we might have experience in that area. There was even a section to copy an agreement statement and then sign our name at the bottom. Goods and Services SpeakersAll this week, we will be having different people from around Coppell coming in to speak about their jobs and whether they provide a good or a service to the city. We have had a few services come in the last couple days! Our first grade learners have been working long and hard for this event. We planted our vegetables back in February and they have grown and grown. Next week we will be harvesting our potatoes, onions and radishes and be selling them in our very own Farmer's Market! This week we have started the advertising process by creating posters to hang around the school. On these posters we are advertising the types of veggies we will be selling! This is a lesson on how to get business to come to our market! Another important part of the Farmer's Market is harvesting! Thankfully the rain stopped just long enough for us to get outside and weed the garden! We worked hard at pulling weeds out of our garden beds so that our vegetables can have one more week of good growing time before we pull them up for washing! One other thing we will be focusing on for the Farmer's Market this week will be the jobs at the market itself! The four job opportunities that the learners will have are being a greeter, a seller, a cashier, or an expert. Each job has a different job description. The learners will choose their top two choices that they believe themselves to be qualified to do. They will have to write a resume, apply, and interview for their jobs. Their jobs will be assigned early next week! Today we discussed the expectations of each of the jobs. How We Organize OurselvesThis week we talked a lot about how different things can influence the supply and demand of goods and services. Things like sources of water and soil/rock can change what people sell to one another. Sources of WaterTo learn the different sources of water, we did a "gallery walk" around the room to write in a notebook and take notes about them. We also did a writing about our favorite source of water and told what it was like when we visited there. We read the book, Drip Drop Splash to learn how the water cycle can change different water sources. Rock InvestigationsWe did some really fun investigations of rocks that involved rotating though each classroom for a different experiment! We also had a lot of fun choosing a Pet Rock! We investigated, measured, and described our Pet Rock, and then gave it a name! We read the book, Everybody Needs a Rock to learn how to choose the perfect rock! What we are doing...This week we will be talking about how supply and demand can affect goods and services. Today we introduced this topic through a few fun lessons! We read the book called, Abuela's Weave, and did some "Turn & Talks" about the story while we read. The story is about a young girl and her grandmother, who weave different things to sell at the market. The little girl, Esperanza, is nervous about selling her tapestry. It turns out that people love her work and they demand for her weaving becomes so great that she sells out of her supply. We did two activities with this book. The first was a Bubble Map to describe Esperanza's personality and feelings in the story. The second was to pretend that we were Esperanza ourselves and that we needed to write a letter to a friend to tell them all about what happened in the market and we felt about it.
How We Organize OurselvesThis unit has kicked off well! We are learning about plants this week and studying them to prepare for our First Grade Farmer's Market. We have begun tending to our vegetables in the garden and getting ready for the harvest! We used our science tools to explore and observe the parts of plants by looking closely at a flower. In order to study plants, we are learning about how vegetables are planted and grown in the garden. We read the book Tops and Bottoms and talked about which parts of certain veggies grow where.
