How We Organize OurselvesThis week was all about needs/wants and goods/services. We compared the two and talked about how they are related to each other. Needs and wants influence the exchange of goods and services. We started the discussion of these things by reading the story, Those Shoes. This story teaches the importance of a need versus a want and how not all kids get what they want. MathTo go along with that lesson, we talked about scarcity and how to make withdrawals and deposits in math. We read a story about a little boy and his mother, trying to plan their summer vacation. Then their TV breaks and they have to make a decision of what to do because they cannot afford to do both. A Lesson in Scarcity: A Pocket ProblemMaking Deposits and Withdrawals
Needs and WantsWe gained a good understanding about the difference between needs versus wants through a variety of activities. We did a sort so show that the things that we need are things that we cannot survive without and the things that we are are just things that we want. We looked at houses around the world to think about what maybe other people in other cultures may need and want and then compared that to our needs and wants. Before getting into how a person's needs and wants can change the supply and demand in a community, we talked about the differences between a good and a service by playing a fun relay game!
