FIELD DAY 2017!!!We had a blast today!!! Check out the slide show!! How We Organize OurselvesFirst Grade Farmer's MarketOur First Grade Farmer's Market is coming up next Friday! This Farmer's Market takes a lot of preparation and a lot of work when we have it! This week we are getting ready to be assigned jobs. There are 4 main jobs at the Farmer's Market:
We took time to write down all the duties for each job by making circle maps. Applying for JobsWe have been working hard to choose which jobs we want at the Farmer's Market. We are applying for these jobs by filling out a resume, a job application, and having an interview. Rocks are made into WHAT??We did a really cool investigation about rocks this week. There are so many things made from rocks, that we don't even realize! We worked in groups to pair up rocks with their product and then we checked to see if we guess right! Harvesting Our Potatoes! Our potatoes are ready to be pulled out of the garden! We had a great time digging them out today! Spring Trip to Dairy Queen!Every fall and spring, a few learners pay 100 Tickets to take a trip to Dairy Queen for lunch! This time Ava, Eva, Neel, Bo and Jesiah paid their tickets to go! We had a blast! SUPERSTAR OF THE WEEK: AVA!
How We Organize OurselvesScarcity of ResourcesWe have been learning all about the word scarcity. Scarcity means not having enough if something that you want or need. We started this week with a "pocket" lesson. We tried to fit all of our wants in one pocket. It was a tight fit and not everything made it in! Rice Bowl FundraiserWe did a fantastic activity about the scarcity of food. We will be participating in a charity called Rice Bowls. This charity raises money to feed the people that are going hungry all over the world. To get an understanding of what world hunger really means. We did an activity in groups. Each person in the group had a paper plate, but all but one were allowed to draw food on their plate. One out of six people are going hungry. We worked together to brainstorm the reasons why so many people are going hungry when there is enough food in the world to feed everyone. We also compared this to things that kids in the United States worry about. Everyone is bringing home a rice bowl to collect money in for the next two weeks! Let's fill them all up and save some people from being hungry!! Soil and RocksWe have explored some soil and rocks in the classroom this week! We did a lot of great investigations and activities to help us learn. We investigated soil from our own home and then compared it to others. Belly Button BoyWe read this fun book about a boy that never cleans his belly button, who has then gathered layers of soil and a seed in it. He sprouts a bush in his belly button! We did our own writing piece about what we would do if a plant grew out of our belly buttons! We investigated and sorted rocks by their size, shape, color, and texture. Everybody Needs a RockThis is an amazing book that helps kids learn how to choose their own pet rocks with 10 Simples Rules. We of course applied these rules to picking our own rocks in the classroom today! Our RocksFARMER'S MARKET FIELD TRIPWe had a blast at the Dallas Farmer's Market last week!! Check out all t eh fun we had!! SUPERSTAR OF THE WEEK: JP!
How We Organize OurselvesEsperanza's PerspectiveWe reviewed the story Abuela's Weave and read the story one more time. Then we talked about her character and made a bubble map to describe her. We talked about what it must have been like to be her in the market that day. We wrote a letter to a friend as Esperanza, telling them about our experience in the market.
