Yesterday's NewsOur Day Today!Thanksgiving Story Bracelets This morning we learned the story of The First Thanksgiving in the library with Ms. Sine. We made a bracelet to help us remember the story, so that we can retell it to others. What would you take on the Mayflower? We had a deep discussion today about what we would take on The Mayflower if we were pilgrims. Each table group represented a Pilgrim Family. They were only allowed to choose 10 items from a list of 30 to take with them on the ship and these 10 items would be their key to surviving the 2 month voyage to the New Land. Don't Tattle!!We have started to work really hard on not Tattle Telling in our classroom! These are some of that strategies we have began trying to help with the problem! Our Day Today!Writer's Workshop We started writing about what we are thankful for today by using a method called Stop Light Writing. We begin our story with the "green light" introduction. Then we will add the "yellow light" details and stop with the "red light" conclusion. ELAR We are digging further into the meaning of Thanksgiving. Today we read a story that describes what the journey on The Mayflower was like for the pilgrims. We discussed what was on the ship and what was not on the ship, and then made a list of the items we would bring on The Mayflower if we were pilgrims. Tomorrow, we will be working on creating a list of the 10 items we would need to survive the journey in groups. Math Stations: Subtraction We really enjoyed switching up our Math Stations today! Superhero of the Week: AryanAryan wants to be a Policeman when he grows up. His favorite superhero is his Dad. He is really good at soccer and is happiest when it is his birthday. His favorite school subject is Science, even though he is a superhero because he is good at Math! Thanks for being a Superhero Aryan!! Our Day Today!Writer's Workshop We have started another Expository Writing on "What We Are Thankful For..." Today we created a circle map together and then used our white boards to share what we are thankful for with our table groups. Throughout the week, we will be planning and coming up with what we are the most thankful for and putting it into writing! ELAR Today we started a small unit over Thanksgiving! We compared the First Thanksgiving with the way we celebrate Thanksgiving today. After reading a book that compared the two events, we worked together to create out own Venn Diagram to show the similarities and differences. After that we used our own Venn Diagram to come up with any other similarities and differences, on our own. How the World Works: Magnets! To close out our unit of Matter and Energy, we are studying magnets! Today we spent a lot of time exploring the world of magnetism by experimenting with what types of object attract and what types of objects repel. We explored with given materials first, and then were able to move on to a scavenger hunt through the classroom! Reminders:
How the World Works: Forces of MotionWe experimented with the different forces of motion today. Using Marble Works, the learners put together pipes to display the different forces of motion that the marbles under go while traveling through them. Using our newly learned vocabulary for the directions of motion, the learners have taken part in a fun video series to share what we have learned! Enjoy! Our Day Today!Writer's Workshop We have been so fortunate this week! Mrs. Hope, a 5th Grade Teacher has been coming into our classroom to teach us Expository Writing. Yesterday the learners practiced creating a "Possibility Map" about what their favorite Thanksgiving foods are. Today the learners took a topic from that map and put it into a "Multi-Flow Map" in order to explain why they like that certain food! I cannot wait to see what she has in store for us tomorrow! ELAR We are working on the 5 W's while reading. Today we read, The Little Scarecrow Boy and practiced naming the Who, What, When, Where and Why of the story. This is a wonderful technique to use when reading at home, to practice Comprehension! How the World Works: Forces and Motions In Science today, we experimented with ramps and marbles. We came up with a hypothesis about whether we thought a marble would roll down a tall ramp or a short ramp faster. After deciding what we thought would happen, we completed the experiment and investigated what the marble did on the two ramps. Math Stations We had our first official day of Math Stations today, and it went really well! There are four stations and four math groups. This is a daily rotation that the learners will be participating in. Each day they go to a different stations. The stations are "Math By Myself," "Math with a Partner," :Math on the Computer," and "Math with the Teacher." In each station, learners were working with subtraction: R-Time: Do you want to pop the bubble?Today for R-Time we had a really great lesson on Self Control. I blew bubbles over them and allowed them to pop the bubbles as much as they wanted. Then, the learners were challenged to sit and let the bubbles fall all around them while they did not pop them. After this fun test, we played an excellent game of "The Quiet Game." The purpose of this lesson was to show the learners that having self control is important and that we all need to practice having control over our own bodies. Our Day TodayWriter's Workshop and ELAR We have combined what we have learned about nouns and verbs and completed some really fun activities with it! Yesterday we created and labelled some Word Town people named Nancy and Norman Noun and Vanessa and Victor Verb! Today we read Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert and used our nouns and verbs to describe out own leaf people. It was so much fun to go on an actual leaf hunt to find the leaves to build our leaf people out of! Math We reviews what we have learned about Addition by playing in different Math Stations with the Addition Games. We chose between Dot Addition, Roll and Record, and Five in a Row! IB How the World Works: Changes in Matter We did so many fun experiments with the changes in matter this week! yesterday was the best of all because we made our own Ice Cream in a Bag! It was so much fun that we forget to take pictures! Today the learners observed and explored ice and discussed with one another, the changes that water can take through the states of matter. We took this as an opportunity to publish a Post on our Digi Ports! Click the link below to go view them! DINOSAUR GEORGE!!!Our Day Today!Writer's Workshop and ELAR Today we worked on writing sentences using verbs. We practiced finding the action words in sentences by creating our own sentences and playing a really fun Fall Verb Game! We discovered that some verbs are a lot harder to work with than others, especially when they are normally words that are nouns like: rain, snow, and water. Experiment: Making ButterWhat do you get when you mix one liquid (heavy whipping cream) with one solid (salt) and shake it vigorously? BUTTER! Today we experimented with Matter by turning a liquid into a solid. It was fascinating to see how the liquid turned gradually into a solid as we shook a jar with our ingredients in it. By using marbles to help whip the cream, we were able to see this process really quickly! The best part was spreading our homemade butter onto crackers and enjoying an afternoon snack! Our Day TodayWriter's Workshop and ELAR We explored nouns today by going on a noun hunt for fall leaves! We discussed that nouns are a person, place, or thing and then paired up with a buddy to hunt through leaves! We sorted the leaves into the correct category! Math We are still working on our addition skills by working with a partner to play learning games. Today we played Five In a Row and Roll and Record. The learners roll a dot cube and a number cube and add them together in order to complete the game. Play Doh ExperimentWe did a really fun science experiment today that involved creating a change in matter. By mixing 2 solids (flour and salt) and 2 liquids (water and food coloring) together in a bag, we created one solid! We made our very own Play-Doh! Our Day TodayWriter's Workshop and ELAR Today we practiced writing sentences correctly by using proper capitalization, punctuation and spelling. We learned an acronym for how to "Check it," and then practiced correcting some Fall sentences ourselves! IB: How the World Works Today we were assessed on what we learned about Solids, Liquids and Gases last week! We worked individually to cut, sort and glue different objects into the correct categories. After finishing our sort, we were all given the opportunity to take responsibility and check our own work! After our Assessment we observed the different states of matter using balloons. The teachers modeled 3 different balloons to the learners: one fill with air, one filled with water, and one filled with ice. The learners gave examples of how they knew which state of matter was which and why! Math We are still practicing our addition skills by creating combinations of number to form number sentences. Today we played a game called Dot Addition! Superhero of the Week: SHRIYAShriya's favorite Superhero is Super Woman! She loves to read Fairy Tales and wants to be a doctor when she grows up. Her favorite school subject is Science, but she feels like she is really good at math, which makes her very proud of herself! Shriya is happiest when she is with her friends! THANKS SHRIYA!!!
