We did some great experiments with changing matter this week! We watched how solids, liquids, and gases can change to make new things! We started out this week by watching how water can change from solid ice, into liquid water, to water vapor! We filled a beaker with ice and placed it on the griddle. We used a wireless thermometer to watch as the temperature changed with the state of matter. Here is our line graph to show the changes in temperature, both heating and cooling! Our first experiment this week was making butter using movement! We combined a solid and a liquid to make something new. With small jars and marbles, we turned cream and salt into butter! It was delicious!! In our second experiment, we used heat to make something new! We combined more solids and liquids and heated them up to make pancakes! This time, we used the heat from a griddle to create gas to change our liquid into a solid! We reviewed the ingredients that go into making pancakes by reading the Eric Carle book called Pancakes, Pancakes and saying whether ingredients were solids, liquids, or gases. We had a great time watching as our liquid mixture bubbled with gases and became solid, YUMMY pancakes! It was even better when we put our homemade butter on our pancakes with syrup!! In our last experiment, we combined solids and liquids and used freezing to create a new solid. We combined milk, sugar, and vanilla in a baggie and then put that baggie in a larger bag of ice and rock salt to make ice cream!! We shook our bags and rolled them to get the liquid to freeze into a solid. IT WAS SO GOOD!!
