Welcome to 1C!!!
Wow! What a fun class! This was a great first day here in 1C! We all came in a little nervous and quiet this morning, but once we started getting to work and getting to know each other, we had a blast!!!
For writing today, we all practiced how to make a journal entry. We wrote and illustrated what we looked like on our first day of First Grade!
Today we read the book, Chrysanthemum, by Kevin Henkes. We had a really good discussion on how to treat each other with respect and to not pick on our friends for having differences, just like the way all the kids in the story picked on Chrysanthemum for having a long name. After we finished reading the story, we also talked about how many letters were in Chrysanthemum's name. She has 13 letters in her name, which is HALF the whole alphabet! We all wrote our names on white boards and then counted our letters. Then we worked together to graph the number of letters in the different names of the whole class!
We read the book, David Goes To School, by David Shannon together. We discussed all of the behaviors that David has while at school (which are not very good) and then talked about how we could do things differently. At the end of the week, we will all be working together to create our "Essential Agreements." In order to be able to come up with these agreements, we all wanted to understand why we have rules in the first place.
- P-Practice Responsibility
- R-Remain Safe
- I-Include Others
- D-Display Respect
- E-Engage in Learning
Each day we will be talking about a new letter of Pride. Today we discussed P, Practice Responsibility and talked about what that looks like versus what it does not look like. We worked together on the carpet to come up with some ideas, to get those thinking gears turning. Then we all went to work together with our table groups to come up with our own ideas and create our own T-Charts!
We ended our day today with the book First Day Jitters, by Julie Danheburg. This story is about someone having the "first day jitters" on their first day of school. Little does everyone know, this book is about the TEACHER! It was so fun to see all of their reactions when they found out that twist in the story! We all sat for a little while and talked about our experiences this morning, and how we all felt about coming to the first day of school. Whether it was excited, nervous, scared or even weird, we all ended the day so happy!!
