How The World Works
In Math, we are learning how to measure the length of an object using non-standard units, which just means measuring the length of an object with other smaller objects! For example, we can compare the length of 2 objects by measuring with things like paper clips or Unifix Cubes. We will be using this skill next week with our IB Unit by measuring the distance that different items move with pushes and pulls.
We took some time to review what the different states of matter are by sorting solids, liquids, and gases using a Tree Map!
Last week we practiced creating bubble maps and describing solids, liquids, and gases using properties for each to describe with. This week we will be applying what we learned to Poetry Writing! We are using the writing process to create Sensory Poems over a type of matter of our own choosing. Today we completed the "Brainstorming" process by filling out a bubble map to describe our state of matter using our 5 senses. We will use the remaining steps of the writing process to publish our poems.
We did an investigation of the states of matter today, using a balloon as our container. As a grade level, we all went outside to observe the differences between a gas, a liquid, and a solid when in a container versus when it is taken out of its container. The investigation was a great learning experience! We also discussed how matter is constantly changing and can be changed in two different ways:
- Man Made Changes: when a human causes a change.
- Natural Changes: when things change naturally, on their own.
After our investigation was complete, we reflected over what we experienced and answered these three questions:
- How did it start?
- How did it change?
- How did it end up?
