During this unit, we will have an action piece of raising money to fight hunger. Trough the company Rice Bowls, we will collect change that will then be donated to give food to orphanages all over the world. Click their link below to read more about it and watch some great videos! To really gain an understanding of how many people in this world are hungry, we did an activity. One out of six people are hungry and over one billion people have to travel just to get water to drink that still may not be clean. We split up into groups and were each given a paper plate and a paper cup. Then, all but one person in each group got school boxes and drew their favorite meal on their plate. After having our meals, we each got a cup of water. Well sort of... Each person with the meal got a full clean cup of water, while our friend with the empty plate got a half cup of dirty water. We all discussed what it was like to be having our meals while another person had nothing and then talked about how we can help those that are hungry. We each received our Rice Bowl and then listed ways to get extra money to fill them up at home.

OUR DAY TODAY!1C on the Announcements!Math: Personal Financial LiteracyWe are learning all about personal finances this week! We started out by listening to a story about scarcity. This is when you don’t have enough of something to get what you want, and in this story’s case: money. A family has to choose between a vacation, or a new TV. We talked about scarcity, and then learned the difference between a deposit and a withdrawal. How We Organize OurselvesWe have started our sixth and final unit for the school year! In this unit, we will compare needs and wants and how they impact the exchange of goods and services. After learning our new central idea and lines of inquiry, we each wrote an “I wonder...” question for the board. InferencingWe will be reading some very thought provoking books in this unit. A lot of the books we read, don’t really tell all the information, but leave you wondering and inferring what happens with the characters. To gain an understanding of what inferring means, we did a really fun activity! We all went through Mrs. Bishop’s purse and guessed what everything is used for! We made INFERENCES! Making InferencesWe also watched this fun video about making inferences! Needs and WantsWe are starting out by learning the differences between needs and wants. We worked with partners to cut, sort, and glue different pictures. We all day down and compared posters with other groups. There were some very healthy debates happening! Those ShoesWe read a great book about a boy that wants special new shoes, but he can’t afford to buy the exact shoes he needs. We used our inferencing skills to see if we could understand how the boy was feeling. Then we worked in groups to answer inference questions about this book! SUPER READERS!We love the library and our librarian!! SUPERSTAR OF THE WEEK: TY!
Our Day Today!1C on Announcements! Our class will be hosting the school announcements this week and next week! Math: A Lesson on ScarcityWe are learning about scarcity this week and how it related to saving and withdrawing money into accounts. To gain an understanding of the word, we did a fun lesson about how much you can fit in your pocket. When you get too many things, space in our pocket becomes scarce! After we finished the pocket activity, we read a story about a family that has to make a decision on whether to spend money they saved for a vacation on a vacation, or to buy a new TV because theirs is broken. Economics SaleOur Economics Sale was a huge success! Everyone did a wonderful job setting up their store, selling, and then being great customers when they got to buy! Our StoresSellingBuyingOur Day Today! We had a lot of fun today! We learned more about fractions, and took our math and spelling tests. We also finished up our IB Portfolios for Sharing the Planet! There are a few pictures of our fun Fraction Pizza Activity! Fraction Pizzas!Meet the Chefs!Tadpole HabitatOur tadpoles have been moved I to their new habitat. They seem to be enjoying their new space to swim and bubbles to play with! Our Day Today! We learned a lot today! IB Word of the Week: BalancedMath: FractionsWe are learning all about fractions this week! We started out by taking a pre-assessment to show what we already know. Today we played a fun partner game similar to Tic Tac Toe. We had to roll dice and then color fractions to get 5 in a row! IB PortfoliosWe are closing out the unit of Sharing the Planet this week. We have been working on putting all of our work and presentations into our binders. Writing Piece: AnimalsJust to show how much we really learned about our research animals, we did a writing piece about the things we remember. We made circle maps about all the things we could remember about our animals, and then today put some of that information into stop light writing. SUPERSTAR OF THE WEEK: ANAGHA

Math: Making 3D ShapesWe constructed five different 3D Shapes from different nets today! It was a great challenge to cut, fold, and glue the shapes together. Practicing our PresentationsOur Animal Research Presentation began today! These presentations will be posted to the blog tomorrow. We practiced for a bit before we started them today. Our Day Today! We have had a fun couple of days this week! The Tadpoles!Just an update on our tadpoles. They are doing well and growing fast! They even have some little back legs starting to form. We talked about the changes that happen when they start to grow their legs and one big change is that once their front feet form, they no longer have gills to breathe under water. We handed rocks to their small tank to help them get used to being able to get closer to the surface. Math: 3D ShapesWe have moved on to 3D shapes this week! We started out with a pre-assessment to show what we know about 3D shapes already. Then we learned about faces, edges, and vertices of different shapes. We also watched a Math on the Spot video about attributes of shapes and then we played a game of “Which doesn’t belong?” We also went on a 3D Shape scavenger hunt with a partner around the classroom! IB Word of the Week: EmpathyWe read a wonderful book called One to teach about empathy. The number one stands up to a bully to take care of the other colors. Sharing the PlanetAnimal ObservationsWe observed a photograph of a bear in its natural habitat. We wrote on post-its to share what we see, what we think, and what we wonder. Research ProjectsOur research projects are coming together nicely! We should be able to start presenting on Thursday! SUPERSTAR OF THE WEEK: ANSHU!
Our Day Today! We have had a fun day! We even got some new additions to our classroom! MATH: Shapes! We enjoyed exploring with shapes this week! Tadpoles have arrived!!We got our tadpoles today! We will be observing their life cycle and watch as they become frogs! We loved observing them in their tank today! We talked about what we think tadpoles need from us to survive and made a circle map all together. We also want to track their growth, so a couple times a week we will sketch and label pictures of them with their changes. We read a book to learn more about these changes as well! FAREWELL BRYAN!!Bryan is moving with his family! We spent some time saying good bye and celebrating with him this afternoon! We will miss you, Bryan! Our Day Today! We had a great day! We started something new in math, read a very thought provoking book, and continues with our research projects! Math: ShapesWe are learning about shapes! We started it out by taking a pre-assessment about 2-Dimensional Shapes. Then we worked together to create a circle map about what we know about shapes. Then we looked at different attributes of shapes and explored with pattern blocks. Interdependence of Plants and |
