SHARING THE PLANETHabitatsWe have had a great week so far! We started out the week by showing what we learned about different animal habitats last week. We made circle maps or tree maps to show that we know what animals, plants, and water sources are present in that habitat. My animal adaptation is...This week has been all about animal adaptations and how animals change to survive in the environments. We have been doing and will keep doing some really neat experiments. We are also doing a fun writing piece about what animal adaptation we would like to have if we could! Wild sense of smells!Animals use their different body parts in such neat and useful ways. One of the most important adaptations that animals use is their sense of smell. We did this great smelling activity. We each had a small vile with a different scent in it. The object of the activity was to find others with our same scent to form 5 different groups. The scents we used were peppermint, lavender, vanilla, lemon, and vinegar. How do animals use blubber? We did another cool experiment about how animals in the Arctic habitats can survive in the cold. They have this thick layer of fat called blubber. We read a really neat book about Penguins to start the lesson. To do the experiment, we first dipped our bare hands in ice water to feel how cold it is. Then we tried the same thing again, but this time, we dipped our hands in the water with a blubber glove! With the thick blubber glove on, we were able to keep our hands in the water for much longer.
CamouflageAnimals use camouflage in their environment to protect themselves and to hunt other animals. We watched some really cool videos to see how animals use their camouflage in the wild. Then we read a great book called The Mixed Up Chameleon . To see how well we could apply camouflage to an animal, we tried to color a fish to match its background to protect itself from a predator! SUPER STAR OF THE WEEK: BRODY!!MYSTERY READER!!We had our first mystery reader today! It was Bo's mom!! We had a wonderful time listening to great stories: The Giving Tree and I Don't Want to be a Frog. Thank you for reading to us!!
