Our IB word this week is caring. This is one of our learner profiles. Being caring means helping others, being kind, and taking care of the environment. We made our lexicon together and read the book Julius: The Baby of the World. Then we added the word to our vocabulary web! We did a great lesson about estimating and counting today! We each opened up a small orange and tried to guess how many slices would be inside our orange. Then we sorted our slices by how we counted them. Then we got to eat them! We started our first IB Unit! In this unit, we will be discovering the world and how it is constantly changing. That just so happens to be our central idea! After learning about our central idea and reflecting about our experience with the high school class the other day, we came up with questions about what we might learn in this unit. Then we added our questions to the "I wonder..." wall. We are learning about matter. We will learn the properties of solids and liquids and how both can change. We started off by learning the properties of solids and we sorted solids using these. Properties are found by observing solids with our five senses. We each held a Pom-Pom and described it to a partner. Then we observed a mystery bag of solids and sorted them using what we know about the properties of solids. We sorted and described them by size, shape, color, and texture. We added the writing portion to our stories about but change! The way we did this was by first telling our story to a partner. That helped organize our story for writing. Then we also worked with a partner to check for capital letters, punctuation, spaces between words, and sight word spelling!
