This unit has taken off great! We have spent this week learning about needs and wants and their relationship with goods and services. Learning the difference between needs and wants was a bit of a challenge because there are many things that we really feel like we need! Needs are only the items we need for survival. Wants are things that we don't need to live. We started by sorting different pictures into needs and wants. We worked with a group to put the different choices in a place and then we combined with other groups to debate our choices. We have done a book study this week with the book, Those Shoes. This is an amazing book about needs and wants. Before reading this book, we did a writing piece to answer the question, "Should kids gets everything they want?" We all listed different things that we really want, and then did the writing. We also did a book discussion with small groups to all answer questions about the story. Then we shared our answers with the rest of the class. Goods are things that are made or grown that you can go to a store and buy. Services are any kind of work done by someone for someone else. We discussed and listed some different goods and services to show the difference. We had a goods and services relay race to sort cards into two different buckets, while doing different actions on our way! We walked, hopped, skipped, tip-toed, ran, and silly danced the cards to the buckets! We also made our own goods and services streets to show what we learned this week! Learning about money ties in perfectly with this unit! We will be learning about coins, counting money, and personal finance. This week was all about the different coins. We made circle maps for each coin and learned a poem to go with each one. To explore with coins, we used all four to play a fun game called "Heads and Tails" with a partner.

How We Organize OurselvesWe have started our last IB Unit for the year! This unit is all about economics and the relationships between needs and wants and goods and services. We will learn about these things, as well as money and personal finances. We will take all of this knowledge and apply it to our First Grade Farmers Market at the end if the year. HOOK: Economics SaleWe kicked off this unit with a fun sale! Each learner hand made their own items to sell to other classmates. This experience was so great because we got to see what it was like to sell goods and buy goods! Our StoresThe SellingThe BuyingIntroducing the Central IdeaWe took apart our central idea to make sure that we all understand what it means. Then we moved forward by filling out our IB Planner sheet and thinking of questions or "I wonders" for this unit and stuck them on the IB Board. We came up with some really great questions!! SUPER STAR OF THE WEEK: EVAN!!
How We Express OurselvesWriting Our Own StoriesWe have gone through the entire writing process with our fairy tales and fables. We created story maps, did flow maps, wrote drafts, edited our papers, and then published! These stories are so great! DraftingPublished WorkFractured Fairy TalesThis week we have been reading fractured stories to hear some of our debate stories from different perspectives. Certain things happened because the stories were told by other characters! Fairy Tale or Fable DEBATESWe are debating about whether four stories are fairy tales or fables. Everyone voted for what they believe and then we sorted into groups. We debated each side and supplied reasons and proof for our sides. Before debating, we talked about what a debate looks like and what a debate does not look like. We worked in our groups to put our debate scripts together. We will use these scripts as a guidance through the debate. THE DEBATES!Red Riding HoodHansel and GretelThree Little PigsGoldilocks and the Three BearsHow We Express OurselvesFairy Tale or FableWe have reached our final week of this unit! This week, we will take all of our knowledge of the story elements of fairy tales and fables and debate whether a few certain stories fall in either category. We reviewed the story elements for both. We read four different stories today:
After reading and discussing, we each logged in to a Google Form and voted whether each story was a Fairy Tale or a Fable. These votes will be used to sort us into different debate groups and we will have friendly arguments and give reasons why we think these stories are fairy tales or fables. Writing Our own Fairy Tale or FableThis week, we will also choose to write our own fairy tale or fable. Today we started planning our stories by filling in story maps of our ideas. We will create our own characters, settings, problems and solutions, and then the appropriate story elements for each type of story, like magic and royalty for a fairy tale, or a moral or lesson for a fable We will spend the whole week going through the writing process to draft and publish our own stories. Cause and EffectIn Fairy Tales and Fables, different events happen for different reasons. Using our four stories in question for the debate, we will see another side of the story from another character's perspective! Certain things are caused when the events of a story are told from another perspective. To get this started, we reviewed cause and effect and talked about how the cause is what made something happen and the effect is what happened because of it. We read a really fun fairy tale story called The End. This silly story tells the fairy tale starting with the end and going all way back to "Once upon a time..." Different events happen in this story, but then they cause new things to happen in a wild chain of events! It is a wonderful story for teaching the difference between what is a cause and what is an effect. After reading the book, we sorted the events of the story into Cause and Effect columns and put them in order of the book. SUPERSTAR OF THE WEEK: DHARANI!
How We Express OurselvesTypes of MediaWe have been learning a lot about different types of media this week! We each chose a fairy tale to represent in different ways using a letter to a character, a newspaper article, a blog post, and a Facebook profile page for a character. Fairy Tale RapsWe practiced all week to get great at our Fairy Tale raps! We performed them today! Goldilocks RapsThree Pigs RapsRed Riding Hood RapsJack and the Beanstalk RapComparing Fairy Tales and FablesWe compared a fairy tale with a fable and sorted out the things that are the same and the things that are different between the two types of stories. We created presentations on 30 Hands! Check out our See Saw Posts to see them! How We Express OurselvesWe will be doing some great things with fairy tales and fables this week! This should be a really fun four days! Fairy Tale RapsComing up in this unit, we will be debating whether some stories are fairy tales or if they are fables. To start getting familiar with some of these types of stories, we will be practicing and performing some raps! Comparing Fairy Tales and FablesWe are comparing fairy tales and fables! We will work with a partner to create a 30 Hands presentation to compare one Fairy Tale to one fable. Today we explored different stories on a Symbaloo and chose our fairy tale and fables. Types of MediaWe are using a fairy tale or fable to explore different types of media to share stories. We started out by picking a story and just listing the elements of the story. The rest of the week, we will be writing a letter to a character, reporting about a story event in a newspaper, giving our opinion of the story in a blog post, and then creating a Facebook page for a character in the story! MATH: Fractions and MenusWe had a really fun lesson to review fractions last Friday! Pizza Fractions!!! We used a whole pizza to show equal and unequal parts, and how to split a whole into halves and quarters and then all the way to twenty-fourths!! We are using a math choice menu to practice some concepts that we have learned in first grade so far!
INTERNATIONAL DAY!This year at Pinkerton, instead of having International Night, we had International Day! Each grade level took a continent to study and created bulletin boards around the school. We had learners dress up in the clothing from their cultures, we had a neat assembly where learners performed traditions from their cultures, and there is even a Pot Luck Dinner tonight to share the food of the different cultures. The Clothes of Our Different CulturesThe International Day AssemblyThe International Day Assembly was wonderful! There were many great performances put on by different learners in our school. Enjoy watching the video for a few first grade highlights! Touring the Bulletin BoardsWe toured the school to learn all about the different continents. We colored a map of the world for each one and wrote down some facts that we found interesting as we read the boards. It was fun seeing how each grade level represented their continent! Where's Ms. Kirkley?!While looking at the different bulletin boards, we noticed a hidden figure in them! HAPPY BIRTHDAY AVA!!!How We Express OurselvesWe have officially started this next unit! Last week we ended our week with learning our central idea and lines of inquiry. We had a class discussion about what our unit would be about and then we wrote our own "I wonder..." questions to. Add to our IB Board. We are starting by looking at Fairy Tales. We listened to a Prezi Presentation about Fairy Tale Elements. We learned that with the usual story elements of characters, setting, problem and solution, there are also the elements of royalty and magic in a fairy tale. Today we read a couple different fairy tales from around the world and put them into our own Fairy Tale Passport! We will read different stories from the different continents and write the elements! MATH: 3D ShapesWe have moved on from 2D shapes to 3D shapes! We are exploring different shapes and collecting information about how each has different faces, edges, and vertices! We did Math Stations to explore! First Grade Performance of "Sing a Song of Aesop!"Our first graders did an amazing job with their performance!! Enjoy the video of the 1C Highlights! Thank you to Krista Murry for taking these wonderful photos for us!!! SUPERSTAR OF THE WEEK: ROHAN!
