HOW THE WORLD WORKS
Gardening DAY!
SUPER STAR OF THE WEEK: REECE!
THANK YOU, REECE!!
HOW THE WORLD WORKSWe started our second IB Unit this week. This unit is all about discovering the world and how it is constantly changing. After our awesome HOOK on Monday from CHS Earth and Space Sciences, we came up with some great "I wonder..." questions to add to the IB board! We will start the unit with the properties of matter and explore the different properties of Solids, Liquids, and Gases. To introduce how these states of matter can change from one to another, we explored the Scentsy wax! Today we explored different Solids and talked about how to describe a solid by finding its properties. The properties of a solid include size, shape, color and texture. We explored Mystery Bags and worked with a group to write down some properties! We are writing Sensory Poems this week about matter. We explored a certain yummy solid to write our poem about! We used our 5 senses to investigate Skittles and then listed different properties to describe them! Gardening DAY!We spent some time in the garden with Mrs. Pickrell today! It is planting season and we got to plant some bulbs in the Pinkerton Patch! We dug the holes, planted, and covered the bulbs all by ourselves. Then we took some time to be scientists by observing the habitat of the garden. We quietly explored the garden with our IB Journals and took special notes and sketches of our observations! Photos taken by Jake and Joey! SUPER STAR OF THE WEEK: REECE!Reece is a Super Star because she likes to draw. She is happiest when she is reading and is proud of herself because she is so good at reading chapter books. When she grows up, Reece wants to be an Architect. This is a very science based unit and we will be exploring the world of matter! We will learns about properties of matter, states of matter, and changes of matter and MUCH MORE! To read more about this unit, click the button! The CHS Earth and Space Sciences class came in to hook us into this new unit by providing us with some really fun experiences!! We spent some time after the lessons to reflect on what we learned, what we wonder, and our favorite parts! Our Day Today!Beginning, Middle, and End Today we read Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse and talked about problem and solution! Then we talk about which part of the story the problem and solution are in. Pass the Pencil After the book, we played another game of "Pass the Pencil" to write stories in groups. This time we only looked at a picture and then had to write the beginning, middle, and end, plus create a title and a cover! Working hard to complete our research projects!Math: Counting by 10's from ANY Number! Today for math, we learned how to use a 120's chart to count by 10's starting from any number! We have some great counters in our class! Computer Lab Fun on Istation! Our Day Today!Beginning, Middle, and End We continued learning about beginning, middle, and end in the classroom today! We read a wonderful book called Sheila Rae The Brave by Kevin Henkes. We worked as a class to re-tell the story from beginning to end. To practice writing beginning, middle, and end we did a really fun story writing activity called "Pass the Pencil." In this activity a group of three decided how to write a story and only one person can write at a time! One writes the beginning, another writes the middle, and the last person writes the end of the story! Animal Research Projects BEGIN! The posters, books, and 30 Hands Presentations are all in motion! We are working hard to get all of our information from our research packets put into fun and interesting presentations. Math We moved on from Counting by 2's and started Counting by 5's today! We had a blast learning this technique with another fun video! These are great things to be practicing anytime at home!! We counted together and shaded the 5's in on our 120's Chart together to practice! DAD OF THE DAY!!! MR. GRAVES!!!SUPER STAR OF THE WEEK: BINITTA!!Binitta is a Super Star because she likes to make new friends! She is happiest when she gets to play with her dos and she is proud of herself for always finishing her work quickly. Binitta wants to be a Vet when she grows up. Her favorite school subject is PE and her favorite book is Barbie and the Rockstars! Thank you, Binitta!! Our Day Today!Reading and Writing: Beginning, Middle, and End Today we reviewed stories and how they go in a certain order. All stories whether written or read, have a beginning, a middle, and an ending. We read the book It's Not Fair! and then discussed the different parts of that story. After reading the book, we did a fun activity called "Piece It Together" in a small group. We worked together to put the parts of a story together from beginning, to middle, to end! Animal Research Projects We completed our research today and talked about how we are going to present our information! The choices are to make a poster, a book, or use a fun slideshow app called 30 Hands! These projects will begin in the classroom tomorrow! Math We are still working with counting and started learning to skip count by 2's! We watched a really fun video to get our brains moving with numbers! We will be filling out a 120's Chart together all week to mark our 2's, 5's, and 10's! Our Texas Go Math lesson is helping us learn how to count things in groups, using counting by twos as a strategy! Guidance Today!Research is in FULL SWING!We started our animal research today by looking at three different research areas on Pebble Go! We gathered information about our animal's appearance, habitat, and diet! Tomorrow we will start learning about how to use non-fiction books and then add a book to our resources list! To be able to describe our animals in the best way that we can, we learned a little about adjectives today! We watched a fun School House Rock video and then we re-read the book Jungle Drums. Each time we heard an adjective, we gave a thumbs up! We practiced our new adjective skills by describing a lion with a bubble map! MATH: Counting to 120We had a great time with our lesson today. We are learning different ways to count to 120 and did a great review! We started with a word problem to solve in our journals and then did our Go Math lesson! Our Day Today!Jungle Drums Today we read a book called Jungle Drums to review some animal adaptations. In this story a warthog is getting teased by all the other animals for being small. He starts using magic drums to make wishes and switches all the animal colors and patterns around and then all their different adaptations! We had some great discussion about how it might affect animals to change adaptations with another. After reading the book, we did a fun writing activity to think about what animal skin covering we would choose if we could have one! Animal Research Projects The time has come to start our animal research projects to complete our Sharing the Planet Unit! Each learner will work with a partner or a small group to research an animal that they chose. We will be using many resources for this project and learning how to take notes. The first resource we learned about today is Pebble Go. We will take information from our resources and put them into packets. After we complete the research, we will put the information into a presentation! Math This week we are starting Counting to 120! We will learn how to count forward to 120, backward from 120, and skip counting! Today we did a pre-assessment to see what counting skills we already have! We filled in a blank 120's Chart! We also worked out our very first word problem math journal entry! These are really good prompts that get our gears turning! You have to think by drawing a picture, using numbers, and using words to answer the question! Our Math Stations for this module will make sure to get those counting skills going with many different ways of thinking! Some games are meant to play alone, while others are meant to play with a buddy! SUPER STAR OF THE WEEK: PHOENIX!!Our Super Star this week is Phoenix!! Phoenix is a super star because he works really well at school. He is proud of himself because he has a dad and a mom to do things with, and he is happiest when he is building Legos with his dad! Phoenix wants to be a Police Man when he grows up. His favorite school subject is PE and his favorite book is Dr. Who. THANK YOU, PHOENIX!!! What we have been up to...This week we have been talking about the interdependence of animals and plants with their environment including water sources, rocks, and soil. We have done some really neat investigations with rocks and soil! ROCKSWe observed and sorted rocks by their different qualities and talked about the different kinds of rocks that can be found on the Earth. We also discussed how animals depend on rocks in the environment. For fun, we read the book, Everybody Needs A Rock and then adopted our own pet rocks!! SOILWe had a really fun experience in the science lab to observe different types of soil. We looked at loam, clay, humus, and sand by using magnifying glasses and checking different details of the soil like texture and smell. We were actual note-taking scientists and recorded our findings! Our Trip to the Zoo!!Our Day Today! We had a wonderful trip to the zoo last Friday! It was so much fun seeing these animals interact in their environments. Today we did a screening activity to see what we learned about those animals at the zoo. We compared the animals to humans and completed a double-bubble map to show what we know! Sharing the Planet: Water Sources Before we begin researching our animals, there are a few more things to cover. We reviewed animal habitats today and talked about animal needs. One major thing that all animals need to survive is water. There are different ways that animals can get their water in their habitats by finding a water source. Some of the different water sources are streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, and oceans. We read the book Rain Drop Splash to introduce the topic of water sources. Then we reviewed the different sources we already know by making a circle map! We took a gallery walk to observe pictures of water sources and completed a booklet of what we learned for each one! SUPER STAR OF THE WEEK: AADIL!Our Super Star of the Week this week is Aadil! Aadil is a super star because he loves Pokemon. He is happiest when he is riding bikes with his dad and so proud that he plays with his dad! When Aadil grows up, he wants to be a scientist! His favorite school subject is PE and his favorite book is "The Big Book of Dinosaurs."
