Christmas Around the WorldGermanyWe had a great time visiting Germany! We looked at a real Advent Wreath, decorated gingerbread men, and even ate some gingerbread! EnglandWe learned some great things in England as well! We had a great time watching the traditional movie "A Christmas Carol," and had even more fun popping out English Crackers and getting the treats inside! ItalyIn Italy learned about the legend of La Befana and learned how to quill! We had a great time rolling paper and gluing it for our own quilling designs! Christmas Around the World!This week we are travelling around the world to see how other countries celebrate Christmas! We will be going to The United States, Mexico, Germany, England, Italy, and France! We will see all of their Christmas traditions and learn how they celebrate! The United StatesThe US tradition is to put up a Christmas Tree and hang stockings! There are many really fun Christmas Carols to sing and fun Christmas movies to watch! In America, we call Santa, Santa Claus! We celebrated by making ornaments, coloring fun North Pole pictures, and making Magic Reindeer Food! We also read the book, Twas The Night Before Christmas. The next countries we visit will require a passport and a plane ticket! Before each visit, we will board a "plane" and watch the safety video before take-off!
MexicoHola mi amigos! Today we visited Mexico and learned to say "Feliz Navidad!" In Mexico, the traditional celebration is a 9 Day celebration of Las Posadas. We also learned about the legend of the poinsettia flower and why it is used as a symbol of Christmas in Mexico! This week's Math fun!We will be doing all sorts of fun Holiday themed Math Games this week! Today we color coded a tree by making a Christmas Tree Glyph! What we have been up to...Santa's Stuck This week we have been writing about how we would get Santa out of the chimney if he ever gets stuck! We came up with some great stories! We finished our writing and then we made a really fun craft to go along with it! MAPS We are also learning all about Maps to prepare us for Christmas Around the World next week! We have talked about where we live, practiced locating things on the maps, and created our own fun maps with play-dough models and crayons! THE HOUR OF CODE!!!We had a great time taking an hour out of our day to learn some computer science through coding online! We made code for Mine Craft, Star Wars, and Frozen characters! Great job saving your tickets!Today the weather will be...Last Friday, we worked on writing weather reports and then actually gave our weather reports on camera! Click your learner's name to watch their weather report! Our Day Today!We closed out our How the World Works Unit today by talking about the many ways that the world changes around us. We did a review to jog our memories of all the interesting things we have learned in the last six weeks during this unit. After our review, we talked about how all of these words are different ways that the world is constantly changing around us. We did a Frayer Model to show our understanding of 4 different ways that the world can constantly change. After completing the way that the world is constantly changing, we all took some time to reflect about how we ourselves can change the world and make it a better place. It's the holiday season...Time for some fun activities!!This week, we are doing a really fun writing piece called "Santa's Stuck!" This piece is based off the book Santa's Stuck. We are writing about what we would do if Santa were to ever get stuck in our chimney and how we would help get him out! Guidance with Ms. Kirkley!!Ms. Kirkley came in a taught a wonderful lesson about being gracious and appreciating the things that we have. She read two fantastic books to the class today! Tamales and A Chair For My Mother. SUPER STAR OF THE WEEK: YASHAS!Our Super Star of the Week this week is Yashas! When he grows up, Yashas wants to be a singer. He is currently learning and practicing music at home with his mom. Yashas loves to play basketball. He also loves feeding animals! THANK YOU, YASHAS! CHS Astronomy Club Part 2We had the other CHS Astronomy class come to teach us about the sun and the stars today! We had a great time with the lessons and learned A LOT! HAPPY HALF BIRTHDAY VAISHNAVI!!CHS Astronomy ClubToday and tomorrow, the CHS Astronomy club is visiting all of First Grade to teach some really fun lessons about the weather and moon phases! The kids had a great time interacting with the high-schoolers today and they really learned a lot! We explored the wind and wind direction by making wind socks, we explored thermometers and how temperature can change, and we talked about extreme weather by simulating a rain storm! Wind Sock ExperimentWe also read the book When the Wind Blows by Stacy Clark. This book led to some amazing discussions about how the wind can create electricity and help people every day! Temperature and ThermometersExtreme WeatherWe got on PebbleGo today and explored different types of extreme weather. We looked at blizzards, hurricanes, thunderstorms, lightning, and tornadoes! Then we simulated a rainstorm! Today the weather will be...We have also been working on writing weather reports of our own! We will be young Meteorologists and will present a weather report to the rest of the class on Friday! SUPERSTAR OF THE WEEK: ARISSAOur superstar of the week this week is Arissa! Arissa is a superstar because she loves to pose! She is happiest when she is playing with her mom and she is proud of herself because she is amazing at drawing. When she grows up, Arissa wants to be a teacher. Her favorite school subject is reading and her favorite book is Snow White. THANK YOU, ARISSA!!!
