Our Day Today! What a fun day today! We played a great game to review time and we started our research projects for Sharing the Planet! Knock Out Time GameWe had a great competition today! In our classroom, we played a game called “Knock Out.” Our first Rob’s we played with just our class. The kids chose to do boys vs girls! GIRLS WIN!!1C vs 1BAfter our game, we decided to take on another class! We had a very fun game between 1C and 1B! 1C Wins!!!!We were the winners! To show our excellent sportsmanship, we all gave high fives at the end of the game. Animal Research ProjectsWe are coming to the end of our unit, Sharing the Planet. Our summation for this unit is a research project over animals. We picked our partners to work with and then picked our animal together. Today we started the research. We used PebbleGo on the iPads to learn about our animals appearances and their habitats. We will take our notes and form a presentation next week. FIELD TRIP TO THE FORT WORTH ZOO!What a wonderful field trip! It was a beautiful day for a trip to the zoo. We had such a great time! Thank you to all the parents that came on the trip as chaperones to help out!! Check out a fun video of our fun below! You can tell we had a blast!! Our Week!We had a great week of getting ready for Open House! Hooray for You!We made this sweet video to have playing at Open House! MATH: Telling Time!We also started learning about time this week. We learned the differences between an analog clocks and digital clocks. We are also learning to tell time to the hour and the half hour. We had some very fun experiences with clocks this week! Visiting with the 2nd Grade Chicks!SUPERSTAR OF THE WEEK: EMMA C!
Our Day Today! We have had a fun filled day of animals! Math: Measuring Animals and Animal JumpsWe are using our knowledge of measurement to measure actual size anaimals and distances of different animal jumps. We measured using our own feet, baby feet, and big basketball player feet! We read a really cool book called Actual Size to compare sizes of animals. Then we put our measurement skills to the test with a few fun activities. Actual Sizes of AnimalsAnimal JumpsMeasuring Other ObjectsSharing the Planet: Plants and Food ChainsAfter learning about life cycles, we learned all about another form of cycle. Food chains always start with some sort of plant, so we reviewed the parts of a plant first. Then we started talking about food chains. We watched a neat introduction video. This video introduced some new vocabulary and showed us how a good chain works. We talked a little more about food chains and then we had a great time exploring a new game online called The Food Chain Game! Click the button below to get to my student websites page on the class website. After playing the game some, we watched a Magic School Bus episode about food chains.
Our Day Today!MATH: MeasurementWe are starting to learn about measurement this week! We took a pre-assessment to show what we know about measurement and practiced measuring with nonstandard measurement tools! New Spelling SortWe got a new spelling sort today. We are practicing Long A and Short A patterns this week. Our sight words for this week:Make sure you are practicing these at home! Sharing the PlanetA House is a House for MeWe are using the book A House is a House For Me this week for our writing activity. We started out by reading the book and then made a list of different homes for animals with a small group. Author’s PurposeWe are learning about different kinds of books and why authors write. We are talking about how authors write to persuade, to inform, or to entertain their readers. We looked at a fun PowerPoint to play a game to guess what books are written which each author’s purpose. Then we read a fun book to lead into our next lesson about baby animals and their inherited characteristics. Inherited CharacteristicsAnimals resemble their parents when they are born. Humans also have inherited characteristics. This is why we look like our parents and siblings. We watched a very cute animal video to see some characteristics of the different babies. Then we looked at each other’s facial features and drew our partner’s face on paper! SUPERSTAR OF THE WEEK: SANKEERTH
Our Day Today! We had a great day today! Our day started with a Chinese New Year celebration! Second Grade put on a great parade! Animal Adaptations: BlubberWe had a blast exploring the adaptation of blubber for animals in the arctic! We read a very good book about penguins. After our book, we talked about how blubber helps the animals in this type of habitat and we came to the conclusion that blubber is designed to keep these animals warm in the freezing temperatures. We did an investigation to see what having blubber feels in cold water! The Blubber Glove ExperimentTo start the investigation, we felt what it was like in ice water with our bare hands. We stuck our hands in the ice water and held it in there for about 15-20 seconds (not too long!!) to see how cold it really is! It was so hard and so cold! Then, we used a “blubber glove” to hold our hands in the water for longer the second time. It was so warm! Our Day Today!Math: Task Cards and Base 10 BlocksWe are practicing how to solve word problems with bigger numbers! We used Base 10 blocks to make adding these bigger numbers easier! If I had an adaptation...We are continuing with our fun writing piece. We made a tree map yesterday and today we did our stop light writing. We also read a very fun book to give us some great ideas. Animal AdaptationsWe have investigated two more incredible animal adaptations! CamouflageYesterday we explored camouflage! Animals use camouflage to hide from predators as a defense, but also as a way to hide from prey. We read a fun book to show us the importance of being camouflaged! We also watched a very cool video about the top 25 most camouflaged animals! Then we used our knowledge of camouflage to help hide our own fish! Bird BeaksBird have adapted in so many different ways! Their beaks are amazing tools. We explored some different types of beaks in this neat book. We used different tools to represent different bird beaks with a variety of foods. Each utensil represents a beak. We explored andnonvestogated which ones worked the best to pick up each food. Our Day Today!IB Word of the Week: InquirerOur IB word of the week is Inquirer. Being an inquirer means that you ask questions and are curious about learning new things. We finished our lexicon and then we read a book called Verdi to learn how this snake is an inquirer about his yellow scales turning green. Math: Reviewing Place ValueWe practiced subitizing, writing base 10 blocks, expanded form, and number lines today! We will be doing Math Warm-ups each day before our math lessons. Animal AdaptationsThis week is all about animal adaptations. We will learn the different ways that animals eat, move, and survive in their unique habitats. We watched a very interesting video on Discovery Education about animal adaptations. What do you do with a tail like this?We read this great book to see how different animals use their tails, feet, noses, mouths, and eyes. Then we talked about the many different adaptations that animals have and how fun it would be if we had one. We made a circle map of different adaptations that we wished we had! We will turn this into a writing piece this week. What smells? We practiced using one adaptation today. We used our sense of smell to find a matching group. We each had one scent in a baggie. We worked to smell each other’s scents and organize ourselves into 6 different groups. The smells we had were vanilla, peppermint, lemon, lavender, cotton, and vinegar. SUPERSTAR OF THE WEEK: SAANVISHI
Sharing the PlanetWe started our next IB Unit today! We will be learning all about animals and environments in this unit. To kick it off we did an inquiry activity by sorting animal cards in groups. Our Central IdeaWe talked about our central idea and lines of inquiry for this unit and then wrote “I wonder...” questions. Animal HabitatsWe will start out by learning about the different animal habitats and the animals that live there. We listed the different animals that we think live in these habitats. Then we went around the classroom and added animals to circle maps. We also drew water sources and scenery with the circle maps. Planting in the GardenWe planted potatoes in the garden yesterday!! We also took time to observe the habitat of the garden. We made sketches and took notes about the living things we saw. MATH: Adding 3 NumbersWe discovered that we all need to practice our addition facts for Making 10 and Doubles. We took time this morning to review these skills. These two strategies are very helpful when we are trying to add three numbers together. Some good ways to practice memorizing these facts is by drawing your own Making 10 Rainbow and making addition flash cards!
